Austin

If it’s your first time in Austin, you need to see the Texas State Capitol Building for a guided tour. The Bullock Texas State History Museum is full of interesting displays and exhibitions and is an interesting way to fill a few hours. Marshall is another delightful place for those interested in history. The old buildings around town are well-preserved and photogenic. Don’t miss the Michelson Museum of Art featuring art by Latvian-American artist Leo Michelson or the Harrison County Historical Museum.

Jefferson

It is easy to fill up a few fun-packed days in Jefferson, starting with a ride on the Historic Jefferson Railway. The clock museum is highly recommended by locals, as is the Gone With The Wind Museum. 

The pre-civil war town is loaded with historically interesting sites, charming streets, nice restaurants and shopping and churches. Take a walking tour of the town when you arrive to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this most quaint getaway in Texas. Jefferson is a wonderful place to fly to when a weekend away is calling.

Grand Prairie

Near Dallas, Grand Prairie has the world’s largest flea market, museums, shopping, nightlife and amazing food and drink. Asia Times Square is another great shopping and dining spot where you can buy all kinds of Asian goods, including groceries at Hong Kong Market. 

After shopping, you can head to Alliance Skatepark, which is the perfect place for skating in winter since it’s undercover. Everyone should visit Grand Prairie during the winter at least once in their lifetime.

Marfa

Marfa

Marfa is a desert town with a big personality and notable arts scene. A highlight is The Chinati Foundation, a museum on an old army base founded by artist Donald Judd. Just out of town, you can visit a viewing platform where people look for the fascinating Marfa lights phenomenon, also known as the Marfa ghost lights. 

A warming and blissful experience can be had at the Chinati Hot Springs, where you can soak in the warm waters and relax. Marfa deserves to be on the winter tourist map for sure.

Dallas

Dallas

The city of Dallas claims fame for many things, including being a hub of cultural experiences such as ballet, opera and many other exciting performing arts. Catch an entertaining show at the Kalita Humphreys Theater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and get inspiration from the thriving art scene. Art enthusiasts will want to see The Abduction of Europa 

painting by Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre at the Museum of Art. Don’t forget to bring your appetite to enjoy the famous Texas barbecue and hearty southwestern dishes. It can snow in Dallas but not much, although temperatures can get quite low, so be sure to bundle up. During winter, you will never run out of things to see and do in Dallas.

New Braunfels

Nature lovers will adore New Braunfels for its scenic surroundings, German history and culture and cool microbrewery and wintery trail. After a day of admiring the charming rustic environment, visiting historical sites and shopping the antique shops, you will deserve some local-made ale in a cozy tavern. 

At Gruene Hall in the historic district, you can catch free live music shows most days and we say nothing warms you up better than dancing. St Peter and Paul’s Church is worth a visit and so is the Natural Bridge Caverns, one of the biggest caverns in Texas. This will be your most picturesque winter getaway in memory.

Amarillo

Amarillo

Amarillo is another easy-on-the-pocket destination in Texas and is a great place to visit in winter. This historic town with a lively art scene also has excellent eateries, from quality steaks to barbecue to international dishes. Cadillac Ranch is a great place for Instagram shots with graffitied Cadillacs buried in the ground. 

This town gets a lot of snowfall compared to our other inexpensive winter getaways in Texas. You might need your snow gear or at least some mittens and a woolly hat. Be prepared for some chilly temps and lots of fun in Amarillo, Texas.

San Antonio

San Antonio is a bustling city in Texas that boasts a strong colonial heritage. The River Walk along the San Antonio River also attracts many local and international visitors who love the scenic surroundings and handy shops, cafes and stores along the way. For the city’s best views, head downtown to HemisFair Park’s 750-foot Tower of the Americas. 

While you are sky-high, you can indulge in a meal at the revolving restaurant or see the 4D theatre. There’s always lots going on in San Antonio during winter and every other season of the year. We are sure San Antonio will win your heart this winter, just like it won ours.
