Founded in the 16th century, San Miguel de Allende is a colonial-era city in Mexico. It is best known for its Spanish architecture, cultural festivals, markets, artisans galore, and art scenes. Despite being a small town, it is considered one of the most charming small towns in Mexico and a popular destination among tourists, retirees, and artists. It is a cultural hub with plenty of art exhibitions and music performances going around in every nook and cranny of the town. With so many things to do and explore, San Miguel de Allende is a great town to stay in for a day or week.
So, if you are in Mexico City, it becomes pretty easy for you to travel to the town; however, if you are coming from elsewhere, the following options might help you find the best route.
Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende
As mentioned above, San Miguel de Allende is just 250 kilometers away from Mexico City. You can take a bus or go by car, whichever way you prefer. If you are on a budget, we would recommend going via bus as it’s going to cost you $31, whereas, by car, you will end up paying around $255, which is slightly on the higher side.
Two bus companies operate from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende– Futura and ETN. Futura is the cheapest and more comfortable option, with AC offering bed-style seats, a toilet, and snacks. This bus leaves early in the morning and reaches San Miguel de Allende by noon, which gives you the entire day to explore and roam around the city. At the same time, ETN departs in the afternoon and offers more departures.
The bus station is located about 8 km northeast of downtown Mexico City. You can take a taxi to the bus station or metro if you don’t want to spend much on uber. But do remember that there is no direct metro to the station, so you may have to make many train transfers to reach the terminal.
Whereas the indirect route goes via Queretaro, from where you can take a direct bus to San Miguel de Allende. This bus route is only recommended if the direct bus route tickets are sold out as this route is a bit longer and time-consuming.
By Private Transfer
If you have just landed at the Mexico City airport and are not on a budget trip, this is a great option that you can consider. Taking a private ride keeps you away from all the chaos of finding your way to the bus terminal from the airport and also saves time. You need to sit back and wait for you to arrive at the hotel without worrying about anything. But of course, there’s a price for this convenience.

Although you can fly to the BJX airport, which is much cheaper, however, you can also arrive at the Queretaro Airport if in case you are unable to get your desired date at BJX.
Mexico City Juarez International Airport (MEX)
The Mexico City airport is located three and a half hours away from the town of San Miguel de Allende. Even though BJX and QRO airports are much closer to the city, you can still fly into Mexico City and drive down or travel to San Miguel de Allende if you wish to or get a much better deal than the remaining two.
