The town is famous and well-known for its stunning beauty and diverse landscapes, such as; magnificent canyons, mountain vistas, waterfalls, and ancient Mayan ruins. The state of Chiapas also has one of Mexico’s largest indigenous populations.
The beautiful city of San Cristobel de las Casas sits in a small valley at an altitude of 2200 meters and is surrounded by green hills and pine forests. Due to being situated on a height, it enjoys a cool climate. The city is full of cobbled streets, plazas, and colorful markets, making the city worth a visit when in Mexico. Many travelers find it hard to leave as the city is so captivating, surrounded by natural beauty, making it hard to bid adieu.
In this blog, we will give you an overview of how you can spend your days exploring and all the things to do in Chiapas helping you plan the days you wish to spend in this gorgeous town.
Churches of San Cristobal
The state of Chiapas is one of the most religious places in the whole of Mexico, which is why the city of San Cristobal de las Casas is dotted with many churches. While walking down the city center, you will notice some famous churches, including- Cathedral Santo Domingo, Saint Lucia Temple, and Iglesia de San Cristobal.
The Iglesia De Guadalupe is a church just a short walk from the city's center, perched atop a hill. You can visit the church and enjoy the incredible views it offers of the valley.
Real de Guadalupe
Real de Guadalupe is the main pedestrian walkway of the city. The streets of it are filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, especially of many indigenous people trying to sell their handmade items and handicrafts. It is a lively place with a fantastic vibe and a perfect place to spend your nights.
Artisans Market
Artisans market gives you an insight into the life of the local people. The market is full of interesting things such as locally produced textiles, souvenirs, leather goods, amber jewelry, and other things. It is a great place to explore and shop for yourself and your family back home.
Indigenous town
Just a few kilometers from San Cristobal de las Casas lie two indigenous towns; Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula. Both these places are very famous for their culture and traditional lifestyle that the people of the towns still follow. The towns give you the opportunity to learn about their culture, history, sacrifices, and the religion of their community.
El Chiflon Waterfalls
Not many know, but the state of Chiapas has many waterfalls, out of which El Chiflon tops the list, which is approximately 100 km from the city of San Cristobal de las Casas. Though the journey to the falls is time-consuming, however, the views from the waterfalls are gorgeous and worth the visit.
Chiapas has five cascades, the highest one being Velo de Novia, 120 meters high, offering spectacular views from the top.
Canon del Sumidero
Canon del Sumidero, or Sumidero Canyon, is set within a national park in the state of Chiapas. It is the second most visited attraction in Chiapas after the Palenque ruins. The canyon is around 35 million years old, around the same age as the Grand Canyon. You can take a boat ride tour on the Grijalva River during your visit to Sumidero Canyon. The ride offers some breathtaking canyon views; you can see the canyon walls up close and other beautiful features during your ride.
The Canon del Sumidero is one of the best places to visit in Mexico and one of the 13 wonders in Mexico.
Palenque Ruins
Mexico is known for its archaeological treasures that give us an insight into how ancient cultures lived. In Chiapas, you can experience and see the most documented Mayan archaeological ruins, the Palenque ruins. These ruins are as important as the Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Tikal. This world’s UNESCO heritage site consists of platforms, temples, and palaces. Palenque is surrounded by the Tumbala mountains and is set deep into the tropical jungle.
The journey to Palenque from San Cristobal de las Casas takes around four and a half hours, but it is definitely a must-visit.
Agua Azul Waterfall
Agua Azul waterfalls are a series of waterfalls and bright blue pools. You can swim in these pools and enjoy the views while swimming in them. But before going, make sure what season are you traveling in as the color of the waterfalls changes with the season. During rainy seasons the current of the water is much higher and the color of the blue pools changes to brown due to getting mixed with the mud.
You can visit the Agua Azul waterfalls the same day you plan to visit the Planque ruins, which are just 69 km from one another.
