If you are catching a domestic or international flight soon, you might be wondering, can I bring alcohol in a checked bag?

Can I Bring Alcohol In A Checked Bag?

You might have a favourite drink that isn’t easy to find, be partial to your homemade liquor, or be trying to save some money by not racking up the mini-bar bill.

Whatever your reasons to carry alcohol with you on the flight, you will be please to know it is allowed. There are some important rules to note, so let’s find out the details.

Rules about taking alcohol in Checked Bag

If you are taking alcohol in your checked luggage, the Federal Aviation Authority has some strict rules about alcohol content and limits. Here are the rules you need to know.

For alcohol under 24% alcohol by volume (ABV) or 48 proof (that is most beers and wine):

  • For bringing alcohol in a checked bag, there is no limit.
  • For carry-on, passengers are limited to containers of 3.4 oz or under that fits comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag.

Alcohol between 24% – 70% ABV (48 to 140 proof):

  • For bringing alcohol in a checked bag, passengers are allowed up to five litres each if it is in unopened retail packaging.
  • For carry-on, passengers are limited to containers of 3.4 oz or under that fits comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag.

Alcohol over 70% ABV or over 140 proof is not allowed in your checked luggage or carry-on. You may not travel with this kind of really strong alcohol.

If you buy duty-free alcohol after clearing immigration and security, you are limited to five litres of alcohol between 24%-70% ABV or 48 – 140 proof.

If you bought alcohol overseas with a connecting flight in America, you may carry alcohol in your carry-on luggage if the bottles are carried in a see-through, unopened bag from the retailer you purchased from.

You are not allowed to open it and to do so means the authorities may take it off you. Also, keep the receipt as proof you purchased the alcohol during your trip in the past 48 hours.

Once you board the plane, get comfortable in your seat and get the movies lined up to watch for your flight you want to feel like it’s time for a drink. Why not? You are on vacation!

But you shouldn’t drink alcohol in your carry-on luggage. The FAA and most airlines require passengers to buy drinks from the airline staff and keep their beverages to be enjoyed at their destination.

Yes, there are a lot of rules. But when you get to that sunny destination and are sipping vodka and tonic on the balcony of your luxury 5-star resort, which overlooks the ocean, it will be worth it.

Now, what happens on the way home? If you developed a love of Jamaican rum from many fabulous nights at a beach bar on Nine Mile Beach, you might like to take some of that sweet liquid home to relive the memories.

Or you might have some requests from friends and family to bring some of their favourite drinks home as gifts. Customs and Border Protection make the rules regarding this.

If you are bringing alcohol into America for personal use, you are permitted one litre from duty-free if you are 21 years or older. Travellers arriving from the U.S.

Virgin Islands and other Caribbean countries are allowed more. You can bring more than one litre of alcohol from duty-free but can expect to pay duty and Federal Excise taxes as you go through immigration.

Under no circumstances may anyone under the age of 21 years old bring alcohol into the States, even if it is for a gift.

Every state has its laws and rules, which may sometimes be stricter than the federal rules listed above. Often rules for residences are stricter than rules for travellers passing through a state.

Sometimes airlines impose their own rules, so if in doubt, check with your travel agent or on the airline’s website. Most airlines keep their rules in line with government rules to keep it nice and easy.

The consequences for breaking the rules vary from having the alcohol confiscated to having your bags searched or, in some cases, fines. If in doubt, don’t be scared to ask for help.

Don’t break the rules intentionally because it’s not worth the hassle when you get caught. Use your common sense and you will be just fine.

Forbidden items in checked bag

Here are some of the items you can’t take in your checked bag:

  • flammable adhesives and aerosols
  • pressurized air tanks, including scuba gear
  • more than 4 oz of animal spray or repellent
  • lithium batteries
  • chemical kits containing hazardous substances
  • vaping devices
  • fireworks
  • flammable fuels and liquids
  • lighters or matches
  • oxygen
  • flairs

The list goes on to be quite long. Some items could be accidentally packed by inexperienced, tired, or distracted travellers, while others would be very unlikely to be in the suitcase of the average person (like the self-inflating avalanche rescue backpack).

The rules are for your safety and many passengers do mistakenly pack some items that could become a danger during the flight. So while it can be boring and time-consuming waiting for staff to check many bags and ask many questions, in the end, it’s so everyone can reach their destination safe and sound.
