- For bringing alcohol in a checked bag, there is no limit.
- For carry-on, passengers are limited to containers of 3.4 oz or under that fits comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag.
Alcohol between 24% – 70% ABV (48 to 140 proof):
- For bringing alcohol in a checked bag, passengers are allowed up to five litres each if it is in unopened retail packaging.
- For carry-on, passengers are limited to containers of 3.4 oz or under that fits comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag.
If you buy duty-free alcohol after clearing immigration and security, you are limited to five litres of alcohol between 24%-70% ABV or 48 – 140 proof.
If you bought alcohol overseas with a connecting flight in America, you may carry alcohol in your carry-on luggage if the bottles are carried in a see-through, unopened bag from the retailer you purchased from.
You are not allowed to open it and to do so means the authorities may take it off you. Also, keep the receipt as proof you purchased the alcohol during your trip in the past 48 hours.
Once you board the plane, get comfortable in your seat and get the movies lined up to watch for your flight you want to feel like it’s time for a drink. Why not? You are on vacation!
But you shouldn’t drink alcohol in your carry-on luggage. The FAA and most airlines require passengers to buy drinks from the airline staff and keep their beverages to be enjoyed at their destination.

Under no circumstances may anyone under the age of 21 years old bring alcohol into the States, even if it is for a gift.
Every state has its laws and rules, which may sometimes be stricter than the federal rules listed above. Often rules for residences are stricter than rules for travellers passing through a state.
Sometimes airlines impose their own rules, so if in doubt, check with your travel agent or on the airline’s website. Most airlines keep their rules in line with government rules to keep it nice and easy.
The consequences for breaking the rules vary from having the alcohol confiscated to having your bags searched or, in some cases, fines. If in doubt, don’t be scared to ask for help.
